Traditional wineskin2/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Fresh animal skins were used to store new wine that wasn’t yet fermented. In a culture that depended on wine on a daily basis, people knew a lot about how wine was made, stored, and enjoyed. ![]() Jesus had a beautifully layered image that offered an answer. ![]() People struggled with change in those times just as we do now, so when folks observed Jesus’ ministry and mission they had questions: “Why do your disciples do things this way while the conventionally religious people do things that way?” (see Matthew 9:14). Regardless of whether Jesus would have considered himself an innovator (it seems to me he was presenting the truth of who God is and who we are to a world that had lost sight of both) his message and mission seemed new to the dominant culture. He took the ancient way of the God of Israel and revealed it in terms that were new and disruptive to the status quo. Jesus, to the people who first followed him, must have seemed like a radical innovator. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” Matthew 9:17 If they do, the skins will burst the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. “Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. ![]()
